Last weekend we took the boys to the Lantern Festival up in the Poconos.
It was our first time attending this beautiful and magical Lantern event. We arrived completely unprepared and under-dressed. By under-dressed I mean freezing! That is with the exception of D’Artagnan who was warm and cozy in his Dragon costumes plus all the layers he wore inside. He truly was the main attraction in his dragon costume. I lost count on how many people complimented and took his picture that day. He was just darling in his outfit!
We did not know what to expect besides the ultimate experience of seeing thousands of lanterns up in the night sky. We wore light jackets because in our minds it was still summer, completely in-considering the fact that we where in the mountains and it wasn’t a sunny day. All of the attendees had the same struggle or even worse because they didn’t even bring a blanket to sit on ( I saw people sitting on cardboard ). With the temperatures dropping and people freezing, many decided to fire wood from the woods, threatening the event to be cancelled. We came empty handed because we followed the “RULE” of no food or drinks allowed. Apparently the rule doesn’t apply to everyone, I saw people with coolers filled with alcohol and even a turkey fryer. Luckily there was a food vendor who was selling Hawaiian stir fry noodles.
After waiting for what seemed like an eternity and 49 S’mores later it was finally time to light up the lanterns! We had 9 lanterns and couldn’t wait to get them up in the air.As for Alvieri a.k.a. Mr. Popular, made a ton of friends while he played basketball and barely hung out with us until it was time to light up the lanterns. Several attempts of trying to get our lanterns up in the air frustration kicked-in. What may have seemed like an easy task, turned out to be quite challenging. All the while I was witnessing thousands of lanterns float up in the air we were still struggling to get them to light up! It was quite comical to see everyone around us also chasing their lanterns trying to keep them from dropping to the ground without success.
And yes they just kept dropping, ironically the sky was filled with so many others. At that point I said to myself you know what let me enjoy myself and let the lighting up to the pros! I just passed the torch and decided to take it all in. I watch with my sister and D’Artagnan who thought Rapunzel was somewhere in the festival celebrating her birthday.
